Happy Grandparents Day to all you Grandparents out there! Yes I know Grandparents day was September 13th, but I did not know that till the middle of the day yesterday and therefore did not get to write a post about it. So…I figure that it’s better late then never and I wanted to write a tribute to my wonderful grandparents today!

I was lucky enough to know 3 out of my 4 Grandparents. My Grandfather on my dad’s side passed away right before I was born, so unfortunately I did not get to meet him. I was very lucky to have all three of my living grandparents in my life for a very long time. My parents grew up in the same town, and their parents both lived there, so whenever we would go visit one set of Grandparents we always were able to visit the other at the same time. We lived about 2 1/2 hours away from them.

We always stayed at my mom’s parents house. I have some of the best memories of going there as a little girl. They had the best basement with clothes to dress up in, a piano to play, an apple tree to climb, and my grandpa’s work bench to play on. They always kept toys in the attic for us (old toys that were my mom’s) and when we would come the first thing we would do is run up to the attic to get that big box of toys. We spent all holidays up there when I was little. I remember waiting for the Easter bunny and waking everyone up early with my brother and sister, and saying grace around the Thanksgiving table. My Grandpa always used to walk us to the park to play, or to the baseball card shop next door. He was the most gentle soul, and the best Grandpa a girl could ask for. He was always smiling. My Grandma gave the best hugs. She would always bake for us and read to us. She made the best macaroni and cheese. Why was it the best? It was because of her special ingredient. She told us it was “LOVE”.

My Grandma on my dad’s side was a more “modern” grandma. She worked at a store that had the best toys! We would always go to “Grandma’s store” to visit her when she worked there. She had a very jolly laugh, and we always spent the evenings with her when we were in town for a visit.

Unfortunately, my dad’s mom passed away in 1995 on Easter Sunday. It was such a sad day and it broke my heart to see my dad cry. I feel like it was such a long time ago, but in reality I was 15 years old.  Four years this January will be the anniversary of my Grandpa’s passing. He had Cancer and was very sick. Although I was so happy that he didn’t have to suffer for long, I miss him terribly. He and my Grandma loved eachother so much, and she is lost with out him.

My Grandparents were/are a very special part of my life. Words can’t describe how loved I felt when they were around. So be sure to tell your Grandparents you love them. Especially on a day like Grandparents day (even if it’s late!)
